Global Webinar Series: Decentralization and Local Development Around the World

Description

In countries around the world, the inclusiveness and efficiency of the public sector depends on the way in which functions and resources are distributed among different government levels or administrative tiers.

While countries tend toward more decentralized governance and more localized service delivery in the long run, the pendulum does not always swing in the same direction. As such, it is important to ask whether progress has been made toward more inclusive and effective decentralization or localization since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were formulated in 2015.

The Local Public Sector Alliance—in collaboration with the World Bank Subnational Governance and Decentralization Global Solutions Group, UNDP, UNCDF and other partners—is pleased to announce the Global Decentralization and Local Development Webinar Series for 2021-2022, covering each of the global regions:

Decentralization and Local Development in Asia: September 13-17, 2021
Decentralization and Local Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: December 6-10, 2021
Decentralization and Local Development in Latin American & Caribbean: February 7-11, 2022
Decentralization and Local Development in the Middle East & North Africa: March 7-11, 2022
Decentralization and Local Development in OECD & ECA: April 11-15, 2022

The webinar series will consider the state of decentralization in each global region and discuss the political economy forces that have shaped the progress on decentralization and localization (or the lack thereof). In addition, webinar sessions will explore what development practitioners, scholars and civil society organizations can do to encourage evidence-based decentralization and localization reforms that promote more inclusive, effective and sustainable development.
